Russia Fines Google Trillions of Trillions for YouTube Censorship
Russia has imposed an unprecedented fine on Google, estimated at over two undecillion rubles (2 followed by 36 zeros), for removing state-linked and pro-government YouTube channels. This staggering figure dwarfs global GDP, currently valued at around $110 trillion, and significantly exceeds Google’s market capitalization of $2.16 trillion.
The fine, which continues to accumulate, was initially imposed after Google’s removal of content from Russian state media channels like Tsargrad TV and RIA FAN due to U.S. sanctions laws in 2020. The situation intensified following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, when YouTube blocked additional accounts associated with Russian state media, such as Sputnik and RT.
Russian news agencies report that if Google fails to settle the fine within 9 months, the penalty will start doubling daily. Currently, Google can only re-enter the Russian market if it complies with the court’s demands and restores the blocked accounts.
