Amman is set to introduce a new mobile app for yellow taxis, aimed at competing with popular ride-hailing apps. Riyad Al-Kharabsheh, the municipal transportation director, announced that the app will be developed in partnership with the private sector, Greater Amman Municipality, and local taxi companies.

The app aims to improve working conditions for taxi drivers, enhance safety and privacy for both drivers and passengers, and offer a more competitive alternative to existing ride-hailing platforms. Al-Kharabsheh acknowledged that while the rise of ride-hailing apps has improved service quality, this new initiative aligns with Amman’s public transportation policies.

Despite challenges like shared vehicle ownership among drivers, the app is expected to bring multiple benefits, including reducing traffic congestion, securing trip information, and mapping driver routes. Drawing inspiration from similar initiatives in Turkey, the UK, and Dubai, the app will offer lower costs for passengers and drivers, promoting widespread adoption in Jordan.
