Brazilian President Lula Wears Keffiyeh in Solidarity with the Palestinian People

In a significant display of support for the Palestinian cause, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva wore a keffiyeh, the iconic Palestinian scarf, during a meeting with the Santa Catarina Committee of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on August 9, 2024. The committee presented Lula with a letter from BDS Brasil, urging Brazil to end all military agreements with Israel to stop funding what they described as genocide in Gaza.

Lula’s gesture of wearing the keffiyeh was widely praised by pro-Palestinian activists and human rights organizations, symbolizing Brazil’s commitment to justice and peace in Palestine. The images quickly went viral, reinforcing Brazil's alignment with the global call to end the occupation and protect human rights in the region.
